The band reached out to me in 2022 for single art for their single “slack pistol” for their second upcoming album. The creation of this work spawned from charcoal studies I had created of the human skeletal form in college classes. Then the single was created through digital manipulation. The band reached out to me in 2022 for single art for their single “cassandra” for their second upcoming album. The creation of this work spawned from charcoal studies I had created of the human form and drapery in college classes. Then the single was created through digital manipulation. During the process of this I was reached out for a small animation intro to the beginning of their music video for “cassandra.” This animation was also inspired from those charcoal studies. Majority of the work I created centered around the ever-changing Appalachian landscape I’ve grown up in. Understanding the aesthetics associated with it at all angles and how the landscape stands at the forefront yet holds the footprint of how individuals move within the setting. There’s an interesting exchange that happens between the landscape and the people.

Brand assets alongside a text box that reads: Native Bagel Co. is a locally owned cafe within Berea, KY that serves bagels, espresso drinks and coffee, and lunch items. With humble beginnings as a bagel vendor at Berea’s farmer’s market, the company became a small-town favorite. Native Bagel was officially opened in 2016 by Katie Startzman who had a desire to spread her love of cafe food and give the Berea community more food options. Ingredients are locally sourced from Berea College’s farm and coffee beans are sourced from local Kentucky roasters Sunergos’ in Louisville. Native Bagel Co. community focused and is centered on providing a space for the community to eat, relax, study, work, and collaborate. Nightjar has become the nighttime parent company of Native Bagel Co. Opening at 5pm, more locally sourced food is served as well as draft beer and cocktails at Nightjar.
Spring 2023 I reached out to the band rabidgrounds with a merch design for them. In the design, I incorperated worked in imagery that alluded to their self titled album art and many different lyrics from their debut album, as well as being a rework of the original “The Moon” tarot card design from the Rider-Waite tarot deck. The black ouroboros snake references the track “blacksnake”, the pink sun references the track “crawl”, and the red line work references the track “crimson.” The dogs, crab, and scorpion reference motifs from the original tarot card design of the Rider Waite tarot deck, but reworked to fit into the brand of the band and symbology important to the band. This design was then release as stickers, and then shirts. Supplemental photography was taken by me as well. a flea on the mind. In 2020, I created the album art for the band’s self titled album rabidgrounds. The band had discussed with me that they were interested in creating a personal motif of two black dogs and wanted the album art to be original artwork of this. I created original artwork illustrations with gouache, ink, graphite, and colored pencil. I wanted to be minimal with the artwork and highly stylized rather than highly rendered and illustrative. I also created a motif of the line running across the cover, the line trailing from the dog’s bloodied mouth to be clever incorporation of their ideas and mine. When the band decided to have CDs of the album made, I was then asked to design the backside of the album with the track listing and other necessary information. The band desired a serif typeface for this design as well. I continued the line motif to the backside of the CD to be the guideline for where the track listing would rest. The color palette on the backside reflected the color palette on the front side. The disc design utilized the same typeface but with a glowing effect on the type. The rest of the disc design was the same charcoal black shade as was used on the album cover. This disc was then printed through Atomic Disk. Supplemental photography was taken by me as well. These highly textural scanography pieces are amalgamations of found ephemera that is both environmental materials, such as pokeweed, golden rod, pine needles, black english walnuts, antlers, teeth and bones, and parts of structures within the environments such as sheet metal from barns, railroad tie wood, abandoned car parts, forgotten wind chimes. It was a exploration in building an abstract landscape floating in a negative space of the Appalachian landscape from pieces of that very place.
Desktop Website Mockup with textbox that reads: What is Letterboxd? Letterboxd is a global social network for grass-roots film discussion and discovery. Use it as a diary to record and share your opinion about films as you watch them, or just to keep track of films you’ve seen in the past. Showcase your favorites on your profile page. Rate, review and tag films as you add them. Find and follow your friends to see what they’re enjoying. Keep a watchlist of films you’d like to see, and create lists/collections on any given topic. We’ve been described as “like GoodReads for movies”. And Why Letterboxd? Previously, our app has been visually busy so we wanted to consolidate the information to what is most important to the user experience. Keeping the research and feedback from our users in mind, we revamped the layout of our app.First and foremost, the app is now horizontal. All users are most familar with a vertical format to their social media apps, what become an issue is that the film-watching experience becomes obscured by a vertical orientation. The vertical orientation does not allow the user to view the art in the way it was intended to be viewed. We have created a horizontal orientation to keep the film in its purest form. Users can see even stills of films in the orientation it was meant to be viewed in. The new layout also allows to users to have a more ergonomic experience. It operates on a carousel-like system. Users can swipe left and right to get to the pages they want to reach. Users can utilize all the same features and functions as before, the only ones that we decided to combine and hide into other features are the “Diary” function and the “Add a Film” feature.

Multiple screen mockups of app prototype and a text box that reads: With an appreciation for this Appalachian small business, a full rebrand of the cafe’s identity was explored with an additional asset of a rewards app created. Typefaces and colors were based on the rebrand attributes of “genuine”, “quirky”, and “boundless.” Names of colors allude to the cafe and the geographical location of the business, Appalachia. A visual display of a the interface gives an understanding of a user’s app journey. The two most important facets of the app were the online ordering and rewards system. The entirety of Native Bagel Co.’s menu was created, sections made for each type of item. The app offers a QR code for the user to scan with purchases. The user’s collected points and loyalty rewards are a page that features a “punch card” to show their points collected and milestones reached. There is a section dedicated to detailing the collected rewards.
When printed, this design was printed on a holographic background for stickers. These stickers had a limit run in Summer of 2023, being mostly sold at rabidgrounds shows. This text is atop original photography by Sydney Hughes of band at Rebel Rebel in Berea, KY.
